Kim Il Sung Military University in Mangyo’ngdae District in western Pyongyang was awarded the Order of Kim Jong Il in celebration of the university’s formal 60th anniversary. DPRK state media reported on 24 October (Wednesday) that the Supreme People’s Assembly Presidium (standing committee) published the awarding of the university’s award on 22 October (Monday). According to KCNA, KIS Military University “has firmly established the leadership system of Supreme Commander Kim Jong Un over the army, laid solid material and technical foundation for education and conducted education and training in an effective manner, true to the Workers’ Party of Korea’s policy of military education and thus trained commanding officers capable of skillfully organizing the modern warfare by chuch’e-oriented war method.”
DPRK state media reported on 25 October (Thursday) that a ceremony was held to dedicate a mosaic of Kim Jong Suk (KJI’s mother) on the campus of KIS Military University. Gen. Pak Jae Gyong, deputy director of the Korean People’s Army General Political Department and Vice Minister of the People’s Armed Forces, presided over the ceremony which was attended by the university’s students, teachers and administrative staff. According to KCNA the “mosaic portrays Kim Jong Suk, her face beaming with a broad smile, standing at the side of Lake Samji against the background of Mt. Paektu.” A floral basket, sent on behalf of the university, was placed at the foot of the mosaic. According to KCNA, KIS Military University President Gen. Ryo Chun Sok said in a keynote speech that “Kim Jong Suk’s career is the one she dedicated her patriotic life to creating the history and tradition of devotedly protecting the leader and providing the eternal future of Korea blessed by the sun” and “called upon all the teachers, students and employees of the university to follow the noble example of Kim Jong Suk and devotedly defend the headquarters of the revolution.”
Several members of the DPRK’s central leadership attended KIS Military University including current supreme leader, Kim Jong Un (Kim Cho’ng-u’n), his older brother Kim Jong Chol (Kim Cho’ng-ch’o'l), Minister of the People’s Armed Forces VMar Kim Jong Gak, National Defense Commission Vice Chairman and Director of the Korean Workers’ Party [KWP] Civil Defense Department VMar Kim Yong Chun, Minister of People’s Security Gen. Ri Myong Su, Director of the Korean People’s Internal Security Forces’ Political Bureau Col. Gen. Ri Pyong Sam, former Chief of the KPA General Staff Ri Yong Ho and former Minister of People’s Security Gen. Ju Sang Song.
