Fraternal Reunion ?

KOREA-NORTH/CHINA

Once Premier Wen has departed the country, I will provide a complete report and some analysis on his visit.  To see more photographs of his arrival in Pyongyang, please visit the excellent news resource Daylife.

Very excited to find your blog today. I will definitely be returning from time to time. Glad to see in your “About” page that you aim to focus on “those power organizations under [Kim Jong Il’s] direct and indirect control including the Korean Workers’ Party (KWP), the National Defense Commission (NDC).” It seems that Kim’s relationship to the KWP in particular gets short shrift and I, for one, would like to know more about the waxing and waning of the Party as an organ for control. If you read the Good Friends’ reports (which seem fairly accurate), it would appear that Party organizations like the Democratic Youth League and the Women’s Union (which scholar Charles Armstrong describes as central pillars of the workers’ state) seem to have eroded badly in their capacity to effect the kind of control you discuss.

Anyway, glad again to have found your site and hope to return and learn more over the coming weeks and months.

I also had a few thoughts about the Wen Jiabao visit to Pyongyang on my blog, based on Chinese sources and simple KCNA readings, at http://adamcathcart.wordpress.com/2009/10/04/kim-jong-il-felicitates-chinese-leaders-updates-on-north-korean-chinese-relations/
