KJI Receives the Chinese

Kim Jong-il received Wang Jiarui in Hamhung, South Hamgyong Province.   The KCNA report was pretty much the same one issued last year. Xinhua reports, “The Chinese president also invited Kim to visit China, once again.”

This was Kim Jong-il’s first interaction with Wang Jiarui since 2004 that did not involve Senior Foreign Affairs Vice Minister Kang Sok-ju.  Instead, KJI was joined by newly appointed KWP International Department Director Kim Yong-il, United Front Department Director Kim Yang-gon and KWP Administration Department Director Jang Song-thaek.

Dispatched on Wang Jiarui’s return flight back to Beijing were MOFA’s Kim Kye-gwan and Ri Gun.

Do you have any speculation as to why Kim would want to receive the Chinese in Hamhung rather than Pyongyang? It seems a bit unusual.

Perhaps there are other instances of the Dear Leader taking some time out from his inspection tours (of vinylon entreprises in Hamhung, and more discussion of living standards, as KCNA reported on Feb. 8) to meet with Chinese diplomats? I’m not aware of any, nor is Hamhung the site of any kind of potential business deals with the Chinese.

I suppose that had they met in Rajin-Sonbong or Sinuiju, we’d be talking more about reviving the old special economic zones or Chinese tourism and less about the nuclear program.

Anyway, just wondering; thanks for the post.

I suppose KJI is just switching it up. Pyongyang watchers have grown accustomed to seeing the mural of the tidal waves at Paekhwawon Guest House. KJI has previously used other buildings when meeting with foreign dignitaries, as KIS before him. KJI did meet Hyun Jung-eun at Mt. Myohyang last summer.
