Research and Analysis on the DPRK Leadership
Several Sino-DPRK interactions are currently ongoing or have taken place this past week. On Saturday (9 July) SPA Presidium Vice-President and Political Bureau Member, Yang Hyo’ng-sop (Yang Hyong Sop) departed the DPRK for China. Yang is leading a delegation on a 4-day visit to mark the 50th anniversary of the countries’ 1961 agreement on cooperation and mutual aid. On 10 July (Sunday) PRC Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang will arrive in the DPRK to attend several events related to the anniversary.
In the spirit of cooperation, T’ae Cho’ng-su (Thae Jong Su) departed Pyongyang on Tuesday (5 July) for Beijing. T’ae is CC KWP Secretary and Director of the General Affairs Department. The purpose of T’ae’s trip was to expand cooperation in the development and usage of renewable energy sources, particularly geothermal resources. From 2009 to 2010 T’ae served as the party’s chief secretary in South Hamgyo’ng Province, where much of the country’s research and development of geothermal energy has been reported to occur. On Wednesday (6 July) T’ae and his party visited with Zhou Yongkang.
Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China who is also secretary of Central Committee of Politics and Law, had a talk with the friendship visiting group of the Workers’ Party of Korea headed by Thae Jong Su, alternate member of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the WPK, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Wednesday.
Zhou Yongkang recollected with deep emotion his meeting with leader Kim Jong Il in the DPRK last October.
He said Kim Jong Il visited China several times and contributed to putting the traditional relations of friendship between the two countries to a new level.
Referring to the recent frequent high-ranking visits between the two parties in accordance with the agreement between the top leaders of the two parties he hoped there would be wide-ranging visits and exchanges in the future, too.
He sincerely wished the Korean people bigger successes in their efforts to build a thriving nation by 2012 marking the 100th birth anniversary of President Kim Il Sung.
According to PRC media, T’ae told Zhou during their meeting that his travel party and he were hoping to learn from China’s experiences in renewable energy.
T’ae also met with Liu Qi on Wednesday. KCNA reports:
Liu Qi, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee and secretary of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met and had a talk with the friendship visiting group of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) headed by Thae Jong Su, alternate member of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the WPK, in Beijing on Wednesday.
Liu Qi said the Sino-DPRK relations can not be bartered for anything and they are stronger than diamond. It is the steadfast policy of the CPC to steadily develop the Sino-DPRK friendship sealed in blood, he emphasized.
He voiced his willingness to strive to boost the friendship, unity, exchange and cooperation between the two parties and the two countries true to the intention of their top leaders.
Leader Kim Jong Il gives ceaseless field guidance to develop economy and improve the people’s living standard, Liu said, expressing his belief that the Korean people will surely build a thriving country under his wise leadership.
T’ae’s arrival in Beijing occurred at the same a 21-member delegation of KPA junior officers were visiting China, led by the director of the KPA General Political Department’s Youth Bureau. According to Chinese press, the group toured Dalian Naval Academy on 4 July (Monday) and gave a joint performance with their Chinese counterparts.
