Kim Jong Un Visits the Ministry of State Security

DPRK state media reported on 20 November (Tuesday) that Kim Jong Un (Kim Cho’ng-u’n) visited the Ministry of State Security [MSS] in commemoration of the anniversary of its foundation. KJU’s last reported public appearance was his inspection the equestrian company of Korean People’s Army [KPA] Unit #534.  Upon his arrival, according to KCNA, KJU looked at “the statue of leader Kim Jong Il erected at the ministry in October last, he promised to have a picture taken with security personnel on the founding anniversary of the security institution, after learning about their ardent wishes” and he “sent warm greetings to the security personnel and congratulated them on the anniversary.”

He was accompanied by Gen. Kim Won Hong, Minister of State Security, and Col. Gen. Kim Chang Sop, Director of the MSS Political Bureau.  Also in attendance were  VMar Choe Ryong Hae , Director of the KPA General Political Department (bureau), and Jang Song Taek, Vice Chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission and Director of the Korean Workers’ Party [KWP] Administration Department.  Due to the nature of the visit, VMar Choe eschewed his KPA dress uniform for a suit and tie, whilst Mr. Jang (who is responsible for the daily management of MSS) was attired in a variation of a party cadre’s uniform.

KCNA reported that Kim Jong Un “expressed the expectation that all the security personnel of the ministry would creditably fulfill their honorable mission to decisively frustrate the moves of the imperialists and reactionaries to stifle the DPRK by displaying the do-or-die will and matchless bravery” and then he attended a commemorative photos session with MSS managers and personnel.  After the photo-op KJU was briefed about the “on the state security work and the progress made in the on-going operations from commanding officers of the ministry.”

Kim Jong Un “highly appreciated the feats performed by the security personnel of the ministry, noting that it has firmly defended the socialist country by mercilessly foiling the plots of the enemies who were resorting to all sorts of despicable moves to block the victorious advance of the Korean revolution.”  According to KCNA KJU said, “the ministry has a very important role to play in protecting the sovereignty of the country and the nation” and he issued “important tasks to be fulfilled by the security personnel.”

    It’s worth noting that Yang Song Taek is not wearing an Army general’s uniform but rather a Korean Worker’s Party ensemble. I suspect that the WKP is in for better days… Political power grows out from the barrel of a gun. And the Party must control the gun. Mao Zedong
