Research and Analysis on the DPRK Leadership
Kim Jong Un’s last observed appearance was his observation and guidance of a rocket engine test and cascade separation
DPRK state media reported on March 25 (Friday) that Kim Jong Un (Kim Cho’ng-u’n) observed and guided a live fire drill of Korean People’s Army [KPA] large combined unit (taeyonhap pudae) long-range artillery pieces in a simulation of “blowing up the Ch’o’ngwadae (Blue House) and the reactionary ruling machines in Seoul.” According to KCNA, it was the “largest-ever exercise” which was “aimed to demonstrate once again the might of the Paektusan (Mt. Paektu) army to bring the most miserable doom to the US imperialists and the south Korean puppet group of traitors through the above-said striking action for turning into a sea of flames Seoul, the den of the Park Geun Hye (Pak Ku’n-hye) group of traitors who dared stage the undisguised ‘precision striking drill’ targeting the supreme headquarters of the Korean revolution and the office of the Workers’ Party of Korea [WPK] Central Committee.”
Attending the drill was Vice Marshal Hwang Pyong So (Director of the KPA General Staff), General Pak Yong Sik (Minister of the People’s Armed Forces), General Ri Myong Su (Chief of the KPA General Staff), Lieutenant General Pak Jong Chon (Vice Chief of the KPA General Staff and director of the General Staff Fire-power Department), Lieutenant General Yun Yong Sik (head of the KPA Artillery Command), General Jo Kyong Chol (Director of the Military Security Command), along with members of the KPA’s Party (WPK) Committee, senior officials of the KPA high command (the General Political Department, Ministry of the People’s Armed Forces and the KPA General Staff), command staff and political commissars of the KPA’s service branches, corps commanders and political commissars at corps-level units, command staff and political commissars of KPA artillery units, faculty of the DPRK’s military academies and senior cadres and functionaries of the WPK Central Committee.
Kim Jong Un and members of the KPA high command arrived at the drill’s venue in a motorcade and he saluted the KPA service members and officers participating in the drill before ascending to an observation post. He was briefed about the drill and Minister of the People’s Armed Forces General Pak Yong Sik delivered a speech. General Pak remarked that the “firing drill of artillery pieces today is the one for devotedly defending the Supreme Commander and the retaliatory one of justice to demonstrate the tremendous might of the Paektusan Army to inflict the most miserable doom on Park Geun Hye” and he called “upon the elite artillery combatants of the large combined units on the front to make intensive strikes with long-range artillery pieces, reflecting the faith of devotedly defending the leader and the unshakable resolution to annihilate the enemy and, thus, blow up the Ch’o’ngwadae and the reactionary ruling machines in Seoul bossed by the Park Geun Hye puppet gang of traitors.”
100 long-range artillery pieces were involved in the drill and during the exercise “opened fire with deafening roar, fiercely pounding the imaginary targets–the Ch’o’ngwadae and the puppet reactionary ruling machines in Seoul.” Whilst watching the drill, Jong Un said that “the brave artillery men…are very good at firing. I am pleased with their very accurate striking.” He expressed “great satisfaction over the successful drill” and “extended thanks of the KPA Supreme Commander to all units which participated in the drill.
Kim Jong Un said that the “KPA should prepare all service personnel as a match-for-a-hundred fighters capable of fighting actual battles by intensifying their training just as the anti-Japanese guerrillas did in Mt. Paektu and keep itself highly alerted so that it may mercilessly pound the reactionary ruling machines in Seoul, the cesspool of evils, and advance to accomplish the historic cause of national reunification, once it receives an order for attack.”
